During construction of the new 1.83km tunnel on the A3 near Hindhead, Hampshire, the effluent system at the Robinia Care home needed to be replaced. The contractors, Balfour Beatty, contacted Owls Hall Environmental as their trusted framework partner to design, install and manage a solution.

Owls Hall Environmental came on board with the project, completed a survey of the area and worked closely with the main contractor, Balfour Beatty and the Maintenance Manager at the Robinia Care Home before proposing the installation of a new, high capacity, twin pumping station. The pumping station was sized in accordance with official British Water “Loads and Flows” recommendations to ensure hassle free operation. The system also included 24 hour backup capacity in case of power failure.

Owls Hall also used their specialist equipment to ‘fusion weld’ the pipes, which passed under the A3 carriageway from the pumping station to the previous existing discharge point. This would ensure they would never rupture causing future problems to the carriageway construction.

This complex project was met with discretion, minimal disruption and such high regard for the environment we were praised by Ruth Kelly Secretary of Transport

Throughout the works it was crucial that the care home had continued access to the mains sewer so that it could continue to operate as normal. It was also vital that residents experienced minimal disruption to their daily lives since many had learning difficulties and other health problems.

Balfour Beatty was praised by the Secretary of State for Transport, Ruth Kelly for the care it had taken with regards to the environment during construction of the A3. Owls Hall Environmental is proud to have played their part in helping to strive for minimal impact on the environment whilst ensuring the success of the project.
